#SayNoToDomesticAbuse: A Call To Action

A Grid Picture of the victim, between marriage and brutality
This got me, this story I'm about to write is just one in a million cries for help amidst some relationships and marriages. Nigeria, a country still building her 'democracy', still have a long way to go in providing laws that protect the generality of people occupying its geographical space, irrespective of their age, sex and gender. Stringent laws need to be enacted to
protect victims of domestic violence, homophobic harassment, sexual discrimination or inequality among many other facing people today.
The above picture is an incidence that happened here in Nigeria, between a lawyer by the name Nonso Nzedebe and his new bride. Where he is said/seen to have chopped-off one of the ear of his wife, for that 'demonic' reason best known to him. To think he is a lawyer is alarming and disheartening, because he is learned and initiated into the Nigerian law and should know better. He is said to have practised in Gadzama SAN's chambers, according to one of his colleague who was a member of his graduating set at Nigerian Law School.
I do not subscribe to such act from a fellow man.
Both men and women in a relationship can be annoying to each other, because its a normal thing, as both of you were not brought up under the same condition and environment. In short, it is okay to annoy each other, because that to me is the FUN in a relationship. Imagine how sweet it is knowing fully well that your spouse can be naughty, you tell him/her to do something but they forgets. This annoying act shouldn't bring out frustration, because that frustration is what leads you to bring out the beast in you.
I used to be in a relationship where I get frustrated with the annoying attitude of my partner, in most cases, I was always tempted to raise my hand, so instead of raising my hand to hit this 'beautiful creature', I hit my head on the wall or pinch myself (you want to know how that hurts?).
Many people are victims of domestic violence today, both male and female. I know of a lady whose husband beats and maltreated her almost every night. He goes as far as cursing her parent and the children she bore him, every night and then. He sleeps with the house-help and returns home drunk sometimes.
Friends kept on advising this lady in question not to leave the marriage but endure (I think it is the suffering-and-smiling syndrome that made those set of friends give that advise). After so many consultation and confrontations from the man, the 'sweet lady' left his sorry-ass.
In as much as, I don't subscribe to divorce, I also do not subscribe to domestic bullying or violence. Some people remain in this kind of relationships and eventually get dumped by their partner. While some kick the bucket as a result of consistent harassment from the relationship. Why would you remain in a 'space' that doesn't bring you happiness? In most cases, partners are said to undergo courtship, seeing all these beastly attitude from the partner, you still stay and expect him/her to change, even when you know s/he is not putting any effort to make that change. Is it because of the money, the cars, or the sex, that you are trading your own happiness? Come on, there are over 7billion people in the world, you deserve better!!!
You deserve not to be a victim of domestic violence or abuse!!!
